The Mithö

Fundación Hatua / The Mithö

The Mithö is a non-profit association with which the The Hatua Foundation collaborates. Its objective is to achieve a cultural immersion between Tanzania and Spain, in order to carry out different cooperation projects: health, cultural, educational and women’s empowerment.

Together, Hatua and Mithö are working to create training schemes in the area for teachers and families on equality and women’s empowerment.

Empowering women means that they participate fully in all sectors and at all levels of economic activity to build strong economies, establish more stable and just societies, achieve development, sustainability and human rights goals and improve the quality of life in the area. The more empowered a woman is, the more prosperous the society in which she lives becomes, because they raise, educate, transmit values and are the family pillar of society.

The next project of Asociación El Mithö, in collaboration with the Escuela de Educadoras Menstruales (Schol of Menstrual Educators), directed by Fernanda Romo, will take place during the month of July 2023. The face-to-face part of the Menstrual Education project will take place at the St. Joseph’s Training Centre. Magdelaine in Canossa, Arusha, with a group of Massai girls aged 14-18. In this centre they will learn during a year of training various tasks such as sewing, cooking, animal care and gardening among others. When they finish the training they will each get a sewing machine financed by the centre with a clear objective: economic and emotional independence so that they feel and are empowered, with tools and resources.

In addition, from Monday to Friday, there will be workshops on the menstrual cycle, self-knowledge and the creation of reusable fabric sanitary towels using the sewing skills learnt.

Finally, the aim is to provide a gynaecological consultation and check-up service in the evenings in different communities in and around the city of Arusha. A service that is very difficult to access or virtually non-existent. Gynaecologists, gynaecological nurses and/or doctors are needed to complete this service throughout the project.
